For this week's Handpan Maker Spotlight, we feature Mejzlik, a passionate handpan maker who left the routine of a desk job to pursue a craft that brings music and creativity to people's lives. Driven by the belief that improvised music should be accessible to everyone, Mejzlik focuses on creating high-quality yet affordable handpans, making the instrument available to a wider community of musicians and enthusiasts.
What is your company name? And what is the meaning/inspiration behind it?
Mejzlik Handpan. It represents my name and the brand I make is "MagicPans".
Do you have a specific name for the instruments you make? (Other than handpan) If so what is the meaning behind this?
Yes! the handpans I make are called "MagicPans", but I am also experimenting with other metal percussion instruments. Currently, I am working on three new kinds of musical instruments derived from handpan and the instruments are called GuTam, GuPan and GuDong.
Who is your company run by? Do you work alone or with a team of people?
I work mostly by myself, but I have a friend whom I have been teaching the principles of handpan making.
Year Founded:
2019
Location:
Czech Republic

How did you first discover the handpan?
In a video focused on meditation and sound relaxation, it was presented alongside a tongue drum and steel drum.
What made you decide to start building handpans?
I wanted to create something meaningful and had become tired of just sitting at my desk job at the computer.
What is your goal as a handpan builder?
To bring the joy of self-created improvised music to as many people as possible!
What would you say your instruments are known for?
I make instruments that are at an affordable price, which has been my goal from the beginning: to build them for the broader masses.
What are your most and least favorite things about being a handpan builder?
My favorite thing is that I am free in my expression while building an instrument. I like to experiment, not only by building new scales but also by creating new kinds of never-before-seen instruments.
Also, I love to meet other handpan enthusiasts. Usually, the handpan community consists of amazing and precious people! The most annoying thing is being constantly asked to retune handpans from other manufacturers, especially the low-quality ones!
If you could only play one handpan scale for the rest of your life what would it be and why?
Not an easy answer, but possibly B minor. I love that scale on the piano, too.
Tell me 1 interesting fact about you, your company, or your instruments.
My first built instrument was a mutant, with bottom notes and two holes on the bottom! I've continued building in this way even till today. Currently, I've started building instruments with all apex dimples (which, in my opinion, sound amazing) and have been adding a new improvement that creates the option to sound like an Udu clay drum. I like developing this instrument to new possibilities and qualities.

Do you take custom orders?
Yes.
Do you have instruments currently available to purchase?
Yes.
Do you have a waiting list? If so, how long?
It is usually about two months until the instrument is ready.
What is one piece of advice you would give to aspiring handpan makers?
Never give up; the beginning can be overwhelming and frustrating, but one day you will get there.
