Handpan Maker Spotlight: Battiloro Handpan

For this week's Handpan Maker Spotlight, we feature Battiloro Handpan, a project that began in 2007 when a group of musicians and drummers discovered the potential of this powerful instrument. Officially founded in 2016, Battiloro Handpan is known for its entirely handmade process in Italy, with each instrument crafted with time, care, and passion. The small-scale artisan approach ensures that every handpan is unique, and sculpted and tuned to perfection.

Battiloro invites visitors to their showroom in Rome to experience their instruments firsthand and runs Handpan schools in Milan, Rome, and Turin, helping more people connect with the magic of the handpan.

What is your company name? And what is the meaning/inspiration behind it?

Battiloro Handpan. The Battiloro in Italy was a person whose profession consisted of beating gold with a huge hammer, transforming it into precious objects.

Do you have a specific name for the instruments you make? (Other than handpan) If so, what is the meaning behind this?

We have a series called Avangarde Percussion - Avangarde adds an absolute first to the original features of our Handpan: a soft membrane, set in a steel ring, becomes an integral and percussive part of the instrument. Two sounds, two distinct rhythms, converge in the same emotional experience. The wooden cone and the Ding placed in the lower part complete and intensify the integration between two worlds.

Who is your company run by? Do you work alone or with a team of people?

We are currently made up of 15 Italian artisans.

Year Founded:

We are a 432 Hz handpan specialist.

If you could only play one handpan scale for the rest of your life what would it be and why?

G2 Hijaz - because being Neapolitans (Napoli - southern Italy) - our musical culture has been influenced by Arabic music.

Tell me 1 interesting fact about you, your company, or your instruments.

Our handpan was an integral part of an artistic installation exhibited during Milan fashion week:

What are your most and least favorite things about being a handpan builder?

Before building the handpan, the Battiloro family worked in gold and coral sculptures and music was always present in our laboratory in Torre del Greco (Naples). Building handpan was the union of two things: sculpture and music.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes

Do you have instruments currently available to purchase?

Yes, Normally we work on models created by us and offer prompt delivery.

Do you have a waiting list? If so, how long?

Custom orders are waiting list only - at the moment 6 months more or less.

What is one piece of advice you would give to aspiring handpan makers?

Try to focus on quality because the market is now full of low quality handpans.
